How do I combine 8 different items into one variable, so that we will have 6 variables, using SPSS?
I have used a 48 item questionnaire – a Likert scale – with 5 points (strongly agree – strongly disagree). The questionnaire contains 6 categories and each category has 8 questions. 8 items correspond to one variable which means that we have 6*8 = 48 questions in questionnaire.

I guess you mean that the questionnaire has 6 dimensions, and you want to compute the total score. before any thing you must make sure if the measurement able to be summative, because some times for some variables you are not allowed to compute the total score, after that if the instructions of the questionnaire permit that you can compute total score by
transform> compute variable> then set the target variable TOTAL and set in the numeric expression box  sum (item1 to item48) > ok
